GALE AND HEAVY RAIN IN NORTH AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, June 23. Heavy flooding and slips in North Auckland at the week-end resulted in mucli of the far north beeoming temporarily closed to road trafiic. A northeasr gale buffeted all the northern part ot the provinee but there were no reports of any serious damage to property. Ka.il services wero nof interrupted and although the departure of the keteli Golden Hind for the Islands, was delayed, there were no instances of damage to shipping or pleasure craft. Transmission on a nuiriber of telepjrone and telegraph liaes was interrupted through trees falling across the wires. From 3 p.m. onward on Saturday gusts of wind in excess of 50 miles an hour were recorded at the meteorologicai office at Mechanies Bay, steadily increasing until the strongest gust of 50 miles an hour was recorded early this morning. The gale moderated at riiiddav. ■ ' In North Auckland rain has fallen almost incessantly since Thursday, although it ' was decreasing toniglit in Whangarei. Nearly 8in. of rain have been recorded since Thursday aud tlie State highways north and south have been flooded although motor traffie can still get through. j
