Gisborne Calls for Ship Following a representative meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, merchants, bakers, shipping interests and the Department of Agriculture, a message was sent to the Shipping Controller suggesting that ■ in view of tlie urgency of fodder requirements of the districts and the arrears of other mercandise the only way was to send a special ship to Gisborne. Tt was agreed that the following were necessary in equal priority with fodder for the next four weeks: Flour, bran and pollard, 800 1 lons; fodder, 500 tons; seed potatoes, 200 tcns; table potatoes, 600 ; tons; general mercandise, 250 tons. "Well, come now," said counsel persuasively, to a defendant in a southern civil case, when the man pleaded inability to pay £2 per month to plaintiff. "Don't you think ycu could reduce your living expenses a bit? There's tobacco, now. Isn't three shillings a weejk rather too much for you to be spending on that?" "Depends on the tobacco," replied defendant. "There are some brands I wouldn't give three bob a cartload for. But I don't smoke 'em. See?" "What brands do you smoke?" enquired counsel. "New Zealand toasted Cavendish, if you want to know. No nicotine in it. The toasting takes it out. That's why. My pipe is my only pleasure, and I can't do with less than three bobs worth a week. See?" Counsel didn't press, the point. Doubtless he smokes himself. New Zealand toasted tobacco is certainly seductive. It's true that it contains no nicotine to speak of. And such a flavour and aroma! There are five brands: Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish, and Qut Pliig No 10; also tailormades. All toasted, and no sore throat, no cough! I
