LOCAL AND GENERAL
Personal Miss P. Small, of the Shannon Dairy Company's staff, is at present on her annual holidays and is a visitor to Hastings and Napier. The friends of Mrs. K. Thomson, of Buckley, will be sorry to learn that her daughter is ill in the Palmerston North Hospital. Saturday's Basketball The Shannon Basketball Club's fixtures played at Levin on Saturday resulted as follows: — The A team lost to College A by 16 points to 12 and the B team drew witn College D, 12 all. The C team had a bye. Quiet Week-end Shannon residents felt the cold over the week-end, being more content to stay mcioors oeiore a hre than to venture out and brave the cold weather which prevailed over Saturday and Sunday. The town had one of the quietest week-ends for some time. On Priday night business people stated that ousiness had been very poor and on Friday and Saturday piaces of entertainment were pooriy patronised. Sunday's sports activities were almost at a standstili; those who ventured out preferred mdoor sport and tne attendance at the Druids' Hall for the week-end badminton was quite good. By the number of truckioaas of hre wood which have been passing through the town from time to time durmg the week, it appears that the present coal shortage is not going to deprive some householders Irom the enjoyment o± an open fire this winter.
