STUDY OF KEW ZEALAND BIRDS
j Six years ago, the Qrnithological .Society of New Zealand was founded tor the field studv of birds in New ZeaJand. The (Society rccently held its nest aimual general meeting sinee 1941, at Ihe Dominiqn Museum, Wellington. , Alenibers from as far alield as Christchurch and Auckland attended.- The retiring president, Dr. Iv. A. Falla (Christchurch) presided, and the following oliicers wero elected: President, Prol't-ssor 13. J. Marples. (Dunedin) : Norlh Lsland vice-president, JNf i-„ E. H. 1). S.tidolph (Masterton) ; South lsland vice-president, Dr. JR. A. Falla; secre-taiv-treasurer, Mr. J. M. Cunningham (Masterton) ; additional members of eoinniittee, JMr. B. B. Sibson (Auckland) and Mr. C. A. Fleming (Wellington'!. The financial statcmcnt showed a healthv position, and a niembership of I'tn. . In reporting 011 the publication of the Society) 's niagazine, "New Zealand Binl Xotes", the editor stated that although issue liad been irregular during the wa r, it ivas lioped to resume quarlerlv numbers. A munber of iuteresting • recomiiiendations wero made to the incoming cnminittee. M r. .T. M. Cunningham tal-led a proposal for the study of niigrat ion's and individual wanderings o!' certain birds by the use of standard molinnis of marking by nieans of coloured log rings. Dr. K. A. Wodzicki suggested that tho Society should apply il s(>] f to a neglected field activity, namely. a population studv of the Ganoot li'sGng ])lacos of the Dominion. !!e thuught it ruight be possible to round ofT such an investigation by using aerial photograplis of the more inaccess'iblo islands.
