BATAL'S PROSPECTS BRIGHT
Batal, winner of the Fresident's Handicap at Franklin last Saturday, is destined to play a major role in richer events this season. He commenced racing as a two-year-old, but showed little form and failed to fill even a minor placing. As a three-year-old he finished fast to run Hunting Lock to a neck in his first race of the season at .the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. At his
next start he showed great stamina to win the Avondale Guineas over a stTong field. He failed to run up to expectations after this win, and was beginning to seem a costly proposition until he secured a decisive win last Saturday. Bought as a yearling at the National Saies, Batal cost his owner, Mr. W. S. Goosman, 1300 guineas. He is a brown gelding by Battle Song from Alma, and is bred on the lines of a reai stayer. His dam, Alma, was the winner of fourteen races, including the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap, Invercargill Cup and many other notable southern handicapsv
