COUNCIL'S JUNE MEETING
MTJCH BUSINESS DISCUSSED • Many matters relating to the administration qf the towp's affairs came "before the monthiy meeting of the Levin Borough Cpuncil last evening. The Mayor (Mr.- H. B. Burdekin) presjded"" and the following members were present: — Crs. H. E. Bowen, V. E, Hudson, W. Telford, A. O. Powell, F.fD. Chain ey, F. E. 'Parker and C. Sherwood- Also Messrs. H. L. Jenkins (toiyn clerk), R. L. Mc|jraifeh (assistant) a'nd K. W. Sandford (engineer) . Leave of absence; was granted Crs. C. H. Cockrell and b. J . Gardiner. Reduced Street Lighting In reply to the council's letter suggestihg that street lights in the borough be cut off frpm 12.30 a.m.,. the Horowhenua "* Power Board wrote stating that this had been acted upon and it would remajn m i'prce until such time as the power ppsition improved, pro'bably about the middle of August. With regarcj tp the question of a commensurate reduction in charges, the letter said that this was to be the subject pf a report to the next meeting of the board. On the suggestion of Cr. Parker, it was decided to ask thp council's representative on the board (Mr. C. S. Keedweli) to urge a reduction in the charges. Request for Footpath Twenty-one residents and ratepayers of the locality petitioned the council drawing attention to the urgent need of a footpath on the eastern side of Queenwpod Road. The Mayor intimated that provision had been. made in the council's proposed footpath loan for this work. Mothers' Club Street Day A letter was read from the Plunket M°thers' Club.seeking permission to conduct a street day at an early date with a view to raising_ funds to purehase equipment" to equip a free kindergarten and play centre in Levin. It was proposed that until this was possible to open a play centre one day weekly. The council agreed it was a highly desirable> project, and quthorised the street day for a date in August to be arranged with the town clerk. His Worship remarked that the movemPht had a very bright future if it could only be started.
Levin Park Domain The works committee reported that the engineer had submitted alternative estimates for covering the .ceiling of the grandstand at the Levin Park Domain. In wire netting it would cost £30 10s 6d and in Pinex £40. The committee referred the matter to the council for a decision. Cr. Parker asked if it was neces•sary, in view of the money already spent at the dorpain, whether thc work could not be deferred. The Mayor and Cr. Telford botn pointed out that birds were creating such a nuisance in the stand shat the work was needed if it was 50 be maintained in a fit condition for spectators to use. , On the motion of Cr. Telford, ieconded by Cr. Chainey, authority was given for the work to be carried out in Pi'nex. The works committee* further reported that the engineer . had submitted estimates of £10 for seat repairs in the grandstand and alternative quotations of £64 and £89 for treating the woodwork for oorer. The council approved the sxpenditure of not more than £19 m repairs, but resolved that treatment of the wood be postponed .ndefinitely. Use of Domain ti The acting-principal of Horo,vhenua College (Mr. A. Haley) >vrote asking for the use of the devin Park Domain on two days weekly for senior rugby practice ■ames, and for inter-cpllegiate matches. It was pointed out tnat lifficulty was experienced with 230 joys in providing accommodation.
