GISBORNE, June 17. A Greek seaman-eook, Agryrios Kandyllotis, agetl 47, was eonvieted and disc-jiarged })y Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., on charges of unlawfully entering New Zealand at Auckland on May 31 and deserting the ship Sambrian at ; Wellington. Evidenee was given by Alan Cliarles Barker, formerly an N.Z.E.F. sergeant and George Edward Frost, also a forjner soldier, that accnsed befriended them on Calamos Island and lcept them at his honie for several months. Both said if aceused had been eaughf harbouring them he would have been ■summarily executed. Aceused in evidenee said before the wai' he owned land on Calamos and a small trading ship. He sheltered a numbe'r of allied soldiers hiding on the island, knowing death would be the jjenalty if he was caught. The islanders were iiow mostjy communists and strongly hostile to the British group. He \yas sure if he returned, the conpnunists wonld prob'ably "shoot him and his family who were still. there. Ile' vyished to stay in the Dominion to work with a brother who vyas in business in Petone.
