FATAL ACCIDENT AT AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, .lane 10. One young woman was killed instantlv and anotlier died in Auckland Hospital, at an early hour this inorning, and two men and a woman are in hospital as the result of a light niotor car in which thev wero passcngers, being- involved in" a head-ou eollision with a tram near the eorner of Ldwin ibtreet and Mount Eden Eoad, shortly before 11 o'clock on Saturday night. The vietiins were: — Killed Miss Margaret Wynne Gillespic, aged 26, of Mount Eden. Miss liayina Jean Pringle, aged 26, Mount Albert. Injured Mr. John Brown, aged 23, whose address is given as care of \:M.C.xV., Auckland. Mr. George itobert lvelly, aged 22, of Remuera. Miss Colleen Gould, aged 21, of Remuera. The motorman of the tram, Mr. 3. O'Xeil, was treated at the Auckland Hospital for shock but was not admitted, while another passenger in the car, Mr. John Frederick Thucll, of Titirangi, was able to return to his home after having been treated for lacerations to the head and shock. The car, which was driven by Mr. Kellv, was proceeding aloug Moum Eden Road towards the city where the party intended to go to a dance. When the eollision oecurred the tram was travelling from the city lilled with passcngers, most of whoui liad been to the theatres. Residents nearbv who heanl tlie noise of the \'iolent impact, ran to the scene to find that vMiss Gillespie who suil'ered extensive head, injuri.es, liad apparently been thrown from the car and had died isntantly. Miss Pringle had received injuries to the head and Miss Gould a multiple fraeture of the | leg. head injuries and concussion. Mr. I lvelly sulferod a fractured jaw and 1 fractured right arm, and Mr. Brown ; lacerations to his head and concussion. i The injured people were sent to hospi- ! tui iu two ambulances which were summoned by a bystander but Miss Pringle ; died at 1.45 a.m. on Sunday. \ The car, which was a light sedan, was , extonsively damaged. The engine was pushed back into the body and the , steex-ing colmn forccd into tho roof of : the car considerably twisted. The frout i jieat was recovered from boneath the tram ufter the accident. Only slight i damage was done to tlie frout of the j tram. Trams travelling along Vlount I Eden Road were ho'ld up for half an ! hour until tlie damaged car was removi ed from tlie tram lines. j Mr. Brown 's condition is satisfactory but Miss Gould and Mr. Kelly are still serious.
