CONSTABLE ASSAULTED
TWO NATIVES SENT TO GAOL On Saturday evening in Plimmer Terrace, Shannon, two Maori orothers were found by Constable Watson to be fighting and using obscene language. He endeavoured co separate ; them, whereupon one jf the two assaulted him and the >ther, with whom he was fighting. :esisted apprehension. After some Lime a bystander came to the j assistance of the constable and the t men were taken into custody. ( This morning in the Levin Court, before Messrs. D. Gardiner and G. jweetman, J's.P., the two men, idam McDonald and Tatere McJonald, appeared to answer ;harges arising out of the incident,. Sergeant W. Grainger told the :ourt that they ,were both from Opiki and pointed out the serious position which could have arisen lad it not been for the assistance if the civilian. He said the police had a duty to perform, and the law gave them protection ' in carrying it The Bench commented that uch conduct could not be tolerated.
