MAKERUA DRAINAGE BOARD NOT SATISFIED
EEPLY CONCERNING LEVELS POR SPILLWAYS. Dissatisiactlou was expressed by the Makerua Drainage Board at its monthiy meeting yesterday wlien a letter was received from tlie Soil Conservation and ltivers (Jontrol Couneil, in reply to a communication from khe board regardiug tlie excessive height of spillways in the lower Manawatu River. The letter drow the attention of the board to a conference of all interested parties which was to be lield in Palmerston North, the object of which Was l.o discuss from all angles the protect ion work in the area mentioned, and urged that the board contact the. Manawatu Catchment Board with a view to sceing whai could be done i* the nrattor. All members of the board expressed their disapprov al of the reply, and it was resolved that tlie council be furtlior communicated with stating that the board was of the opiniou that the conference would have no jurisdiction in connection with the request as regarded the appropriate heights of spillways, and requesting that tlie council give further con'sideration to the matter.. A letter was also received from the Manawatu Catchment Board, stating tliat it wislied to call a conference of locai aulhorilies and other organisa4'tons i u t erested in a sclieme of control l'or the lower Manawatu River, to be lield towards the eud of June, with n view to discussion of the prosecution of the work. Mr. A. P. Grant, engineer to the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, had signiiied his willingncss to attend and addr.ess the conference, but only a tentative date early in July could be submitted. Delegates appointed . by the board were the eliairman, TrUstee J. t). Aitcliison, Trustees L. J. Vile and 8. H. Claridge, and the board 's engineer, Mr. O. J. Dolan. Tlie overseer, Mr. P. V. Tucker, reported extensive cleaning of Nos. 1 and 2 drains, and also repairs in tlioae areas. The Okuku motor pump had been repaired after some delay. Considerable damage had been done by stoek to No. 1 dra-in on certain properties. Cleaning work was started on Ivemp's lagoon drain and would be completed when the water level had subsided. Trustee J. D. Aitehison presided over Trustees S. H. Claridge, H. Sames, I. Croad, N. B. Gibbons, L. J. Vile and ~W. Mc. Williams.
