1 Mr. E. B. Taylor was selected asi 'the ofhcial National candidate for j Lyttelton at a selection ballot. Tiie ! others, who went to the bailot, I were Messrs. F. CoOper and A. N.| Stone. Mr. Taylor was the National j candidate for the Lyttelton seat in! 1343. The death has occurred in Christchurch of Mr. G. M.. Telfer, ! president of the New Zealand Pipe Bands' Association. Born in Carluke, Scotland, he came to New Zealand from England 23 years ago. xle was chief of the Christchurch 'Seottish Society for 12 years and secretary for three, and president of the Christchurch Competitions Society for four ^ears. The death occurred suddenly at noon yesterda^ of Sir James Hutchison, the doyen of New Zealand editors, and for 37 years editor of the Otago Daily Times. For his | services to journalism he was ! knighted in 1936. Sir James was born at Wanganui in 1867, and received his early education at Wellington College and later attended the Otago University. In 1886 he was a member of the reporting staff of the Evening Ilerald in Dunedin for three years and later was appointed to the staff of the Otago Daily Times. In 1909 Sir James was chosen as the successor to Sir George Fenwick as editor. Mr. II. Thompson, of Wellington, nas been elected by the New Zeapand Federation of Labour to represent New Zealand workers at the 28th annual conference of the fnternational Labour Organisation in Montreal in September. Mr. Thompson has given many years' service to the trade union move■nent botli in Wellington and over ■be whole Dominion. He is secretary of the New Zealand Plumbers' ■Jnion, New Zealand Dental Work?rs' Union and president of the New Zealand Building Trade Workers' Federation. He was also elected to the national executive of the New Zealand Federation of Labour. An invitation to nominate an emPioyees' representative for the Montreal conference was extended ,o the Federation by the Governnent.
