TRIED TO POISON WIFE, POLICE ALLEGE
CHRISTCHURCH, -Tune 12. Alleged to have plaeed poison in a billy of milk outside his wife's residence this morning, Williain Andres Smythe, a metal worker, aged 51 years, of 69 Harper Street, was later arrested on a charge of the attempted murder of his wife. He will be chavged in the Magistrate ;s Court tomorrow moining when tlve police will apply for a rere and. Tlie poliee allegation is that Smythe, who has been living apart from his wife for 10 weeks, went to her residenee at 9 Edenbridge Street about 9.15 this morning and plaeed a quantity of quiekacting poison in the milk, replaced the lid of the billy and left the premises without being seen. The billy and its contents were taken possession of by the police before they had been touched by Mrs. Smythe, and .after an analysis of the contents, Smythe was arrested. It is reported that Smythe cycled into the eity and visited an hotel before the police made their hurried visit to Edenbridge Street to begin investigations. The poison, it is alleged, has been analysed as a highly dangerous substance acting in a small quantity with rapidity.
