SWIFT JAY AND BLANKET WORK WELL

Tlie lieaviest tracks so far experieticed this winter at Awapuni curtailed seiui-final trials yesterday moruing for the Manawatu meeting and, on account of the slow times recorded, work on the flat was not very illuminating. The outstanding eifort went to the credit of Swift Jay and Blanket, while others who appeared to handle the going satisfaetoriiy were Hakim, Persuade and Blackwater. Trainers had the use of the outside of the course proper, the pegs being out 45ft. Jumping away from the sevenfurlong barrier, Blanket (Broughton) and Swift Jay (Bowness) iinished on terms to record 1.41 3-5. They rau the first half-mile in 54 4-§sec., and it was easily the best of the morning. Swift Jay again worked impressively and appeared to have a litUe in hand. Eoto Parera (Christenseu) and Golden Tide (Andrews) took 1.17 4-5 for the last iive furlongs of their work. The fornier vvou well at Hastings last week and indicated that he is a much improved hurdler. Gay Stitches (Ewan) was let oif Avith a short spriut down the straight. The Gay Boy gelding looks well, but his form has been nothing to enthuse over. Always under a good hold, Dileas (Amey) eornpleted five furlongs in 1.15 2-5. Hakim (Broughton) and Arco (Boreham) were on terms throughout seven furlongs run in 1.44 2-5. The latter has lrglitened up after his northern trip and is not a definite starter this week. Hakim looks none the worse after his sound eifort at Otaki, and wiii have the services of W. J. Broughton in the Winter (Jup next Saturday. fied Glare (Sauuders) worked over a round, but was not after time. He was responsible for an oxcellent exhibition over a round of the country on Wednesday morning and promises to be a favoured candidate for the Manawatu Steeplechase. Golden Money Song (Andrews) eornpleted the last 'dx furlongs of a round in 1.31. His latest form has been disappointing, but he lacks nothing on the seore of condition at present. Sir Bradbury (Bowry) sprinted half a mile in 56 l-5sec. Newcl Post (Clutterbuck) easily accounted for Beneve (Pearce) over a similar distance in 5b 3-5sec. Persuade (Saunders) beat Donegal Bay (Bowry) over seven furlongs run- in 1.49. The fornier worked attractively and drew attention to her future prospects. There was little between Blackwate) (Broughtou) and Tula (Saunders) at ihe eud of seveu furlongs in 1.44 3-5. l'he former looks improved after his race at Otaki and may soon make amends. Havildar (Clutterbuck) iinished better than Insulate (Brou-ghton ) over the conciuding stages of iive furlongs run in 1.17. Moderate, who has been suifering a ! leg injury, was among those noticed dorng liglit tasks. Aithough he appeajs lo have made a good recovery it is nol lilcely that he wiil be asked to race 1'oj a while yet. Aithough he rapped a couple, Jaspei (Fagan) gave qurte a satisfactory exhibition in a schooling task over si.\ hurdles. Sovereign Lad (Andrews). Itinlc (Fagan) and Mary Jo (Bowry) wero associated in a bout over si.N hurdles. Mary Jo proved too experi oiLced for her companions and out jumped them at every fence to linisli in front. Sovereign Lad's performanci was quite sound for a beginner, bui Kink was inciined to shirli his task. (Juisinier (Tempertou) made no inis lakes while clearing four hurdles. Aithough he does not sliow mucli likiiig for the game, Full Pitch (Mc Kiunon) safely negotiated eighl steoplechase fences. In a similar task Ellerton Hall (AndrcAvs) was more im pressivo, his jumping being very pro licient throughout. The JN'ightly geld ing was taken in hand by J. Wallei after thc Dannevirke Hunt meeting. Ividing engagements anuouuced foj Awapuni on Saturday include: — 31. Andrews: lioto Parera, Ellerton Hall, Gold Money Song. C. Bowry: Mary Jo, Penwilt, Pcll ineor, Sir Bradbury. W. Aitkcn: Bay liobe, Persuade. L. Clutterbuck: Czarina, Havildar. G. Tattersall: Dileas. V. Scllars: Arco. E. Tempertou: Cuisinier. H. Pearce: Donegal Bay. J. Fagan: lied . Glare, Authoress, Sovereign Lad. W. J. Broughton: Hakim, Blanket.
