YESTERDAY'' S SITTING The monthly sitting of the Mag.istrate's Court was held at. the Levin CouTthouSe yesterday when Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M.,'presided. IHegal Sale of Wine William Henry Robbins '(Mr. N» M." Thomson) was charged in twro instances with selling wine without .being in posr.ession of a license. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant W. Grainger stated that defendant had engagecl two agents to sell wine in this district and had, without license, purchased wine at •an hotel to suppiy the agents. • Counsel for Robbins said that the iatter had previously been employed by one Chan to act as a retailing agent of wine and in view of this engagement he had employed sub-agents to act for him. Chan had' failed to suppiy the wine which he (Robbins) liacl . contracted to suppiy to his sub-agents, and to keep faith with them he had unwisely purchased win.e from a hotel to furnish them with stocks. The accused was eonvicted ancl flned £10 on the first charge and £5 011 the second, with 10s costs on each charge. Traffic Bveaches Ronald Clarence Janett (Mr. N. M. Thomson) was charged (a) with. having 110 motor license and (b) with failing, to give a visible signal when tiirning at an intersection. The defendant pleaded guilty. On the first charge defendant,' was eonvicted and fineci 20s, with costs 10s, and on the further charge he was eonvicted and fined 10s, with costs 10s. Alexander John Souter was charged ea) with driving a motor veliiele without a driver's license ancl (b) with driving at an excessive speed. — Convictecl and flned £1 011 the first charge and £2 10s on uhe second charge. Samuel Francis Bircl was chargecl (a) that on April 20 last, in "Wellington, he did clrive a . motor /ehicle without a driver's license, md (b) with driving a motor vehicle without being in possession jf a warrant of fitness. — A convicion with a fine of £2, with costs 10 s, was entered on the first . :harge and -on the further charge lefendant was convictecl ancl flned Is, with costs 10s. Cecil Jolin Duff was charged withiriving a motOr van in Oxford Itreet, Levin, on March 6, 1946, at 1 speed wliich was or might have jeen dangerous, The defendant jleaded not guilty but was convictd ancl flned £2 with court costs 12s. Riding Unlighled Cycles Barnard Calthrope Strode-Penny, jharged with riding an unlighted 'ycle, was eonvicted and flned 30s vith costs 10s. Percy John McLeavey, charged a ) with riding an unlighted cycle md b> with riding without a rear efleetor was on the first charge •onvictecl and flned 30s, with costs 10s, ond on the further charae was •onvictpd and flned 5s, with 10s costs.
