LARGE-SCALE DEVELOPMENT
- GOVERNMENT'S PLAN FOR CHRISTCHURCH MINISTER GIVES DETAILS ' CHRISTCHURCH, June 7. , Grouped under the headifigs of land development, communicationsT utilities, housing, social services and puDiic adnnnisiration, seventy-two projects are included in the Government's ten-year plan of development for Canterbury regional and adjacent areas submitted to local boay representatives by the Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) this ' morning. ^ Included in this list are such. long-awaited works as? the tunnel road — contingent on the concurrent development of port facilities at , Lyttelton— a new railway station for Christchurch, reclamation at Lake Ellesmere, new outlete hnking the city with the main high- / ways north, south and east, an industrial railway line from Sockburn to Styx extensions and to Harewood aerodrome, ' hospital and university extensions, a second block of the chief post office, a new police station, a new broadcasting studio, ' overhead railway bridges at Sockburn and Hornby and extensive drainage schemes in North Canterbury. Large-scale housing d'evelopments are also projected. Simultaneously with the annqucement of these schemes is the issqe of a Gazette notice to secure land 'values against increases as a resuit of the contemplated works. Sel'ected areas of land scattered through- • out the district are covered by the Gazette notice, and the intention is that this action will permit free discussion of the proposals without inflating land values against _ the Crown and the local authorities , concerned.
