WELLINGTON, June 7. j Fire so damaged St. James'' Anglican Church, Lower Hutt, this , morning that repair and rebuilding will probablv be out of the question. The fire was first seen about 6.30 a.m., but is believed to have been ; burning for some hours hefore. The vestry and chancel roof had burned through when the brigade , arrived, and the body of the church • was filled with flame and smoke, so that once an outing was gained for the hose leads the old and heat'dried timber burst into a single mass of flame. Except at the rear of the church the roof stands, and the fire penetrated the walls only here, but the voof aria Ww 'S n.re deeply charred and are an unstable shell. . , , '*?*•
The church was msurea, dui ine cover . cannot nearly meet the cost of rebuilding. The insurances on the building were £6175, including 'the furnishings. ! i Rev. J. C. Davies, formerly of St. j • Mary's Anglican Church, Levin, is the vicar of St. James' pafish.
