APPROACH BY CHURCHES.

WELLINGTON, June 4. A deputation from the lnter-Church Council inct the Prime Minister and other liieiubers of the Cabinet to urge an extension of eoiupulsory ration ing in New Zealand, particularly at tlie source of supplies, in order to meet tlie urgent food nceds of Britain and Europo. Rev. P. Gladstone Hughes introduced tlie speakers, among tliem being Rt. Rev. II. Ilolland, Bishop of Wellington. Two liours were spent in discussing the position with hlr. Fraser, the Minister o; Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan), the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. B. Roberts), and departmcntal 'orticers. Tlie deputation after wards stated that the Prime Minister liad pioiuised to place its representalions before Cabinet. Many of the difficulties of further rationing were pointed out to the deputation by the Ministers. The progress being made in regard to voluntary efforts was explained, it being stated that it was clear tliat the amount of food being saved for export overseas uiuler this system was niucli grcater tlian the coupons indieated. This was due to a new arrangemcnt with the niaster groeers regarding butter, and more stringent rationing of meat. The kliiiibter of Agriculture indieated that the plans evolvcd by tlie joint committee of tlie Agricultural Department and the Farmers" Federation wero being ])ushed abead.
