WELLDNCtTUN, June J. Tb.e possibility of the Department of Health ordering the sterilisation or talcum powder against the risk of tetanus infeetion was mentioned today by Dr. F. S. Maelean, Direetor of the D*ivision of Publie Hvgiene. This would mean the reeall and treatment of all talcum powder now in the hands of retailers. Questioned aliont the risk of infeetion, Dr. Maelean. said that when the powder was used on a healthy and unbrolcen skin there was no risk. People who had euts or abrasions should use only a powder which they knew to have been sterilised. He added that the j practice of dusting baby's skin with a j talcum powder after a batli was not necessary if the baby was dricd | thoroughlv. I ' The position is being very closely watched by the department," he said. "If we thinkdt is necessary action wiU be taken without delav. Investigations ! are continuing, but in any case, for the i treatment of newly-born babies only a , preparation of zinc oxide and starch previously sterilised by lieat should be used."
