STEPS TO OBTAIN BETTER QUALITY TYRES
MINISTER'S EXPLANATION TO MOTOR UNION A statement that the quality of tyres in New Zealand had been governed by the rubber control authorities was made by the Minister of Supplies ana Munitions (Hon. 1). Ci. Sullivan) in letter received by the council of tne North Island Motor Enion at^ its quarterly meeting in Palmerston Xortli vesterday. The viinister stated that the control authorities not only stipulated the amount of crude rubber but also tne types and quantities of synthenc rubber which were to be utilised in tne construction of car and truck tvres. The matter was one that had beCn ■presented to him on various occasions, said Mr. Kullivan, and every step had been taken with a view to bettering the quality of tyres generally. Manufacturers would give no guarantee about the quality of their produets and accordinglv it had been possible oniy to' secure adjustments 011 tyres tliat might prove to be of faultv construction. "When negotiations were proceeding for the supply of tyres to New Zealand in 194(5, the question of quality was particularly stressed, " said .Mr. . Sullivan. ' ' Assurances were received from manufacturers that tyres coming into New Zealand would be of the same quality as tliose manufactured for their own use, and should it be possible, adjustments and warranties woula ' applv to stocks coming -to New Zealand'." ■; The letter, which was a reply to a L ! resolution forwarded to the Minister ■ ■ by the council, was received.
