ITALIAN MONARCHISTS IN PRE-ELECTION PARADE
LONDON, May 25. Defying the Government ban on processions, tens of thousands of nionarchists and sympathisers in Rome, waving fiags and carrying patriotic jjlacards, lnarched to the Quirinal where, in responso to shouts, King Umberto apiieared three times on the balcony. The police several times made baton charges in an eft'ort to halt the demonstrators and there were many lierce scuft'les but the Iioyaiist "shock troops" at the liead of the proeession smashed through, shouting at the police: "You've been hongl^.5' Crowds continued to parade the city's central streets until atter nightfaii. ' - The correspondent adds v that as a denvonstration of monarchist feeling, it ttdmittedly was impressive and certainly .not a good omen for a peaceful general election on June 2.' Repubiieana and Left extremists are aiready planning counter deinonstrations.
