DARING ARMED HOLD-UP

LOWER HUTT SWEET SHOP ROBBED ARRESTS QUICKLY FOLLOW

WELLINGTON, May 28. Following a hold-up of a Lower Hutt sweet shop last night, three young men, one of them carrying a loaded .38 calibre revolv-er, werearrested in The Esplanade at Petone fifteen minutes after the rob- j bery was first reported to the police. About 10 p.m. a man with a white handkerchief over the lower part of his face entered the sweet shop of the De Luxe Theatre, in High Street, Lower Hutt, with a revolyer. and demanded the money' in the till. The proprietress, Mrs. A. Jones, who was warned not to scraam or attempt to follow him, was badly frightened, but took careful note of such of the man's features as she could see above the handkerchief, and also of his clothing. Meanwhile, another young man, believed to be an accomplice, entered the theatre manager's office and asked the time, apparently with the intention of occupying attention while the hold-up was proceeding, Soon after three young men were. seen running in the direction of the bus depot. The police were informed and fifteen minutes later, and only 20 minutes after the robbery, detectives in a radio car arrested the three voune men.
This morning David Marsh, 18, of no occupation, John Miillaney, 21, farmhand, and Dennis Arnold Cyril Priestly, 19, labourer, appeared* in the Magistrates' Court, charged that, being armed with a revolver, they robbed Ada Anne Jones of £4 14s 6d. Mr. H. G. Hume,,J.P., remanded them until June 4.
