EMPIRE HAS FIFTH COLUMN
PEOPLE WITH SPIRITUAL HOME IN RUSSIA AUCKLAND, May 25. "In each of our countries there is a substantial number of people who believe earnestly and fanatically that their spiritual home is Russia. These people constitute a great fifth column. The recent spy trials in Canada prove this. " * This was a statement "by Mr. Justice Uornish in an address at a reception held by the Royal Empire Society last night. He said Empire Day, 1946, was not an occasion for unrestrained rejoicing. The'days when the Enjpire was at its zenith had passed, and Britisb power and influence were now contracts ing with the loss of India and Egypt. He drew attention to the ideological split in all parts of • the Empire hetween the Right and the Left, and said he hoped a middle course would he steered between Capitalism and Socialism, but added that , a great change had come in the attitude of many people to the idea of the Empire, and he was pleased the word would no longer he used contemptuously. The Dominion Lahour parties, through their spokesmen, Mr. Chifley and Mr. Nash, were enthusiastic in the maintenance of Empire accord.
