COMMERCIAL GARDENERS GIVE APPROVAL
EXECUTIVE'S ACTION IN DISPUTE Approval of the action taken by the Dominion executive in the dispute over container charges was expressed by a meeting of commercial gardeners at Otaki on Saturday. The growers arranged for a number of growers to go to Wellington to assist in the open-air markets. A delegation from the Chinese federation, headed by Mr. Peter Chu and including representatives from Hawke's Bay, Ohakune and Wairarapa,, was present. Mr. JDhu submitted proposals for the Chinese federation providing for a central committee in Wellington to flx prices daily for . the sale of vegetables to the public. A levy of 5 per cent. will be made on all saies, the proceeds from which were to be devoted to a "flgliting fund." It was felt that the produce was grown for the public, and growers would see that they were supplied. Retailers already had the means of more than recouping themselves for the cost of the containers. It was not generally known that they were allowed to include the cost of the container in assessing the retail cost of the contents. They recovered two-thirds of the cost of the containers in the profit margin. In addition to refund, a similar amount was available on its return. The growers had agreed not to charge for defective containers.
