WELLINGTON, May .17. A claim for tlie introchiction of a live-dav week for workers under the Tvpographical Award, in the newspaper industry, was heard by the Einergeiicy Disputes Committee in Wellington today. Members of the committee are: Ohairman, Mr. J. A. Gilmour, S.M.; workers ' representatives, Messrs R. H. Thomas, J. Mclnnarney and li. Norris; employers' representatives, Messrs J. M. Hardeastle (spokesnum), E. \*. Dumljleton and L. J. Berry. Mr. K. Baxter was advocate for the workers. Parties to the dispute are tlie New Zealand Printing and Related Tradcs Industrial Union of Workers of New Zealand and Pederated Newspaper Broprietors' Industrial Association of Employers. The substance of the claim was: Daily newspaper workers slionld eomplete a week's work in a maximnm of iive days; workers required to work on six days should be paid 10s in addition to double time for all work done on the sixth day; all otlier workers should complete a week's work in iive days — Monday to Eriday ; in daily newspapers the five-day week should be operated 011 a roster system spread over six days. After the hearing of the main submissions, the committee continued deliberations in eamera till 6 p.m. and resumcd after an adjournment. At the conclusion of the sitting it was announced that members had not reached an agreement and the making of a decision was therefore left to the chairman. In accordance witli the regulations, his decision will be the decision of tho committee.
