POLICE 40-HOUR WEEK AND PROMOTION

-Press Association

By Telegraph—

WELLINGTON, .May 14. A statement by Ihe New Zealand Police Association 011 tlie subject of the Press Association message from Christchurch says: "The Association is coTiducting negotiations 011 tlie question of a 40-hour week and because they are to nioet 'the Minister next Friday, regard all aspects of tlie question as sub judice. For this reason they regret any publie statement has been made. , They are asking for recognition of the 40-hour week principle although realising it will not be possible uiilil more men are available. Tlie Association desires to correct a statement that members at present work only 45 hours. Practically all are on a nominal 4.S-liour week but whatever work has to be dorie, is dorie irrespective of hours. Tiro Association knows of 110 memoranduni 'just issued' improving tlie position as to the promotion at 13 years' service. A constable tu'iv sit for a sergeant's exaniiiiation after tive years' service and if he passes. is then eligible for promotion subject to his position on the seniority list. Jn the past a few men have beGrt fortunate to reach promotion after 12 to 13 years' service. The average length of service befftre reaching sergeant's rank would l)e nearer .17 years."
