Received Wednesday 9.30 p;m. NEW YORK, May 7. The United Nations subcommittee on the status of' women, has unaiiiniously adopted a world plati'oiin 011 marriage. It provides tliat a husband should have only oue wil'e at a tinie. Wives have the right to divorce husbands and women have the right to. choose their own husbands. Aliss Angela Jurdak, the youthful Lehanese.dolegate, was an outspoken opponcnt of husbands having more than one wil'e simultaneousiy, while Madame Marie le Eaucheux eontended the subjeet was none oi' United Nations business. She pointed out that there were large areas oi' the French Empire where polygamy was ])ractised as a custom "and we shouldn't have the right to interfere. " p Miss Jurdak deelared the Cdmmission's object was to determine how to raise the status of women and couldil't overloOk poly- ' gamy as a violation of woman's dignity. Alrs. Ilansa Alehta (India) deelared that the Commission shouldn't be afraid of tighting customs. "We shall have to fight chikl niarriage. AVe shouldn't be content just to talk ahout these things. We should make a stand." Eventually Madame le Faueheux withdrew her opposition and j the platform was adopted, together with reeommendations that ! women should be given ecpial political Tights with men, including j the right to vote -and hold pubiic office.
