AUCKLAND FACES MILK SHORTAGE

AUCKLAND, May 6. The prospect of a niilk shortage in Auckland during the winter months was mentioned ,by the ehairman of the Auckland Aletropolitan Milk. Board, Mr. A. S. Bailev, during a survey of the suppiy position. Mi\ I3ailey said there ipight be a shortage of up to 1000 gallons dailv by the end of this month and that as there was prospect of a further decline until August, sonxe ratxoning would be necessary. Mx*. P&iley said that at the end of last month 25,000 gallons a day were being received from regular producers and a further 5500 gallons from auxiliarv suppiy sources. It was expected the auxilxary supplies would soon decline. It was impossible to predict how severe the shortage would be. One forecast put the maximnm winter defieiency at 5000 gallons daily but it was hoped the shortage would be considerably less tlxon that. The directer of Milk Marketing, Alr. H. H. Ixxnes, had reqxxested that the boax'd shouhl supjily a forecast of its suppiy position so that the necessary powets could be granted to ratioix milk. The board decided to suppiy a forecast contaiuing the details given by the cliairman.
