DEPLORABLE APARTMENT HOUSES

AUCKLAND, May 2. Conclitional licences for 141 Auckland apartment , houKes which only partly complied with' by-law conditions, wero authorised by the City Council tonight. "All that can be said of the conditions in some of these places is that they are deplorable, " said the chairman of the Council 's housing committee, Mr. Burton. He added that there were 7853 people living in apartments and board- j ing houses in Auckland. Quoting oue i of the worst c.ases, he said,: "ln one { place in Auckland, it was stated' that j all the apartments had. improvised | -kitchenettes. Tliere was a room 23 feet ' (5 inches by IS |eet divided by flimsy | wall partitians into five -rooms which; were used as 'oue family unit. The j twelve tenants of this apartment house | shared one batli. There was no basin. j The san'itary inspector was instructed J to report to the Council on all cases , where something could be done to im- j prove conditions.
