Direct Action Hinted At discussions next week

WELLINGTON, May 3. Indications that consideration might be given to direet action -in cases where dwe|Imgs are standing •idle in Wellington city and subnrbs was given at a meeting of the execiitive of the Second N.Z.E.F. Association last evening. Members -stated that their attention had been drawn to several instances of Aousing" standing empty. * It was announced that the Wellington Citv Council had granted permission for a deputation representing fifteen local organisations, ana headed by the Second N.Z.E.F. Association, to wait upon it next Monday afternoon to. discuss the housmg problem and present plans for immediate action. "This is a matter that goes beyond the welfare of returnecl servicemen only," said the chairman, Mr. H. K. Heyder. "It is a national emergency and something which concerns the city as a whole." Mr. Heyder said that although transit housing was one of the principal -matters to be brought forward by the deputation, it was at the best only. a short term policy and an emergency measure. It was proposed that transit housing be given to people in the first priority class only, and be distributed between returned servicemen and civilians on an equal basis. "What the deputation .intended to demand was that something should "be done at once, ! and at a low cost.
