Posfhumous V.C. Awarded ipjsh cuardsman's bravery

Received Friday, 10.30 a.m. LONDON, May 2. The Victoria Cross has been posthumously awarded to an Irish' guardsman, Edward ' Colquhoun Charlton, for valour beyond all praise. Charlton was a member of a tank troop which was attacked by a battalion of panzer grenadiers, supported by six self-propelled guns, at the village of Wistedt. Charlton's tank, with others, was put out of action. Charlton took 4t maehine-gun from the tank and counter-attack-ed the Germans alone, advancing up the road in full view of the enemy. His fire halted the German company, inflicted heavy casualtiesl and relieved the British fo'rce. Charlton was wounded in the lef-t arm, but kept up the fire until his left arm was again hit and fell away shattered; He lifted the gun on to a fence ahd with his remain-' mg arrn fired until he was hlt a ird time. He collapsed and was taken prisoner, subsequently dying in enemy hands.
