The existenoe pf-ia^maehine named synchroton, wliich may be able to smash neutronS arid protons, possibly producing subnuclear energy J'ar siirpassing atoniic energy, is revealed at University CaliTornia after long secrecy. It is explained the machine turns j electrons into eosmic ray particles whieh are the most powerful , manifestations of energy to come within the seientist 's experi- j mental range. It is also revealed that Russian scientists have developed a similar machine almost simnltaneously. The synchroton. was eonceived and developed by Professor i Edwin MeMillan, a brilliant young atomsmasher and co-discoverer J ! of the new element plutonium. He explained that the synchroton j I was designed to give electrons a speed equivalent to 300,000,000 | volts. He hoped soon tliat it would be possible to build the synI chroton to produce electrons with a speed of 1,000,000,000 volts, at wliich level a part.icle would have the energy of some of the most powerful cosmic rays. • i
