Oiliver Memorial ohield RA1LWAY NARROWLY WINS Considerable interest was taken in the Oiliver Memorial Shield match played at Otaki on Saturday in perfeet weather and on a keen green. A match between the Railway and Otaki Clubs played last December resulted in a draw, two and a-half games each, with 106 to 102 points in favour of Railway. In another contest in. February Railway had a comfortable win by five games to two, 156 points to 135. Five games were played on Saturday, Otaki winning three and Railway two, with the points in favour of Otaki by 106 to 87. In the aggregate Railway thus won by 349 points to 343. The shield was handed over oy the president of the Otaki Club (General R. Young) , who congratu,ated the Railway players on their Aiccess and expressed the hope that all had had enjoyable games. He ihen asked Mr. Oiliver to present the shield to the president of the Railway Club (Mr. Rule) who, m acknowledging the complimentary remarks made by Mr. Oiliver, assured all that his team mates had had a most enjoyable day, and that they were pleased to have won the trophy. The Afternoon's Play There was a full green during the afternoon, players being present from the Paraparaumu and Railway Clubs, and some enjoyable games resulted. Boggs aird S. Merwood (s) ; championship rink: L. Moss, J. Lambess, H. Nicolson and C. Pike- -(s); colt championship: F. Boggs; nomination rinks: L. Walsh, R. Kearns, T. V. Cahill and C. Grey; victory pairs: F. Boggs and N. Barron (s) ; veterans' cup: General' R, Young. Applause accompanied.eac'h presentation, after which General Young took the opportunity "of expressmg thanks to Mr. Stan. Merwood, the green. su-pervisor, -who?had prepared the green to the satisfaction of all, to the match committee, _ Mr. Les. Walsh being given credit for his fine work, to Mr. C. Grey, who had had the unenviable task of selector, and to the ladies who had done much during the season, especially those. who had been the means of raising over £33 by a shop day for funds to enable the pavilion to be improved. Special thanks were extended to the club members who had given the speaker their help and co-oper-ation during his term of office, and he then declared that the green was officially closed. Russell Cup Game A match for the Russell Cup took place on the Otaki green yesterday between teams representing the president and the vice-president. The games ended in favour of the latter by 103 points to 98 points. ^ In presenting the cup to the vicepresident (Mr. M. Coventry), the president (General R. Y.oung) thanked players who had participated on his behalf, while Mr. Coventry did the same to his players.
