BUCKLEY CLUB'S OPENING
FIRST SEASON AFTER FOURYEAR RECESS The Buckley Golf Club opened the season in fine weather on Saturday afternoon. There was a good attendance of both old and new members. -The president (Mr. C. M. Cronquest) , prior to declaring the season open, dedicated a memorial plaque to the memory of three members who fell in the 1939-45 war. The plaque bears the names of Messrs. P. Easton, E. Easton and D. G. Mercer. In speaking of these members, Mr. Cronquest stated that it was to them and others like them throughout New Zealand that sport in its various branches was functioning again. Those who had paid so dearly on the battlefields had for us made sport as we knew it secure in this country and the free countries- of the world. To these men a debt of gratitude was owed, and it was for this reason that the plaque was unveiled. Those pfesent honcured the memory of their fallen
comrades by standing in silence. The president, in declaring thc season open, stated that the clut had been in recess for four years and this had entailed more work than the usual seasonal opening To those who had worked so hara to make this day and season a success, the members thanks were due. To the Stern Bros., for the use oi the links, thanks were also due. It was not often that an indication of a season was so pronounced but by the number of new and- old players present the forthcoming season promised to be one of the best on record. To the visitors from Levin land all the new players, Mr. Cronquest expressed a cordial welcome l and voiced the hope that thej> would have an enjoyable afternoon The season was declared open with Mrs. Cronquest driving the i first ball of the season from the clubhouse steps. A mixed foursome was played, thc winners being Miss E. Stern and E. W. Clark, with a score of 34. The nine-hole stroke competition was iwon by W. Stern, whose score was 33. Other scores returned were: N. ; Birch 39, F. Ficard 40, T. Boon 43, E. Wilson 44 and L. Beck 47.
