GAOL FOR CAR CONVERSION
AUCKLAXD, April 29. Five eharges of converting motor-cars of a total value of £1425, were admitted by a soldier, Victor Albert iMartin, aged 20, who appeared before Mr. L. G. IL Sinelair, S.M. Martin also pleaded guilty to four eharges of theft. Senior-Detecti.ve Trethewev said accused was a member of the J Foree and had been absent without leave when the offences had been committed. tle had driven the cars around the city and had abandoned them, and had eventually been arrested in one which he had taken. Mr. Sinelair said that offences of thi> nature were ori the increase and the penalties must be heavier. On the first charge of conversion Martin was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hani labour, and on the others he was convicted and -'ischarged. On the first theft charge he wesentenced to three nonths' lmpris viment, the sentences to be cumulative. On the other eharges of theft he was Convicted and discharged. Nine eharges of conversiort of motor cars of a total value f £2770 and four eharges of theft and one charge of breaking and entering with inteut to commit a crime, were preferred against a textile worker, Bruee Dalton, aged 21, who appeared before Justices of the Peace to-day. Detective Wils.on produced a state ment.in which Dalton admitted the offences. Dalton, who pleaded guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
