Received Sunday, 7 p.m. LONDON, April 28. ' ' Because the Socialistic movement is not materialistic but is based on the acceptance of moral values, it could not work with those who rejected its ldeals," said Mr. Attlee in a speeeh at a meeting of the Northern Council of the Labour Party at Newcastle-on-'i'yne. He added that the Coinmunist Party gave lip service to democracy but it was essentially undemocratic. The methods by which it sought to gain. power disre : garded altogether the 4 pbligation . to! maintain standards of conduct which alone made life possible ih civilised society. He was confident the Labour Party, at the conference at Bonrnemouth, would again reject'the plea from those who, for their own purposes, sought to intrude their organisation on the international situation. Mr. Attlee said the Government was trying to cooperate closely with possible allies but it was as wcll to remember that cooperation with others meant that one could not always get one's own way. Impatient idealists found them selves up against obstinate reaiities The Government had inherited from the past, many diflicult problems not admitting of an easy solution. Mr. Attlee said: "I should like to see the Spaniards put an end to the Franco regime as quiGkly as possible." Replying to a question regarding the appointment Of ambassadors with Tovy leanings, Mr. Attlee said: "I do not think the appointment of ambassadors should he on party linesi You have to ehoose the best man for the job."
