OSMOND SHIELD SHOOTING
HAUTERE'S FIRST SUCCESS: An interesting history attaches to the Osmond Snield won by the Hautere Defenee Rifle Club at the. Wellington Rifle Association's championship prize meeting held on' the Somervilie range, Trentham, on' April 13. The shield was presented to the Association in 1920 by Mr. C. H. Osmond, and was originally' intended as a' trophy for senior cadet teams in a special match to be included in the Wellington Rifle Association's prize meeting programmes. The records show that it was competed for once only, in 1922, being won by a team representing No. 30 Senior Cadet Company (Wellington Technical College). From 1928 the shield was made available for award to the winning team in the champion teams match, which was a feature of W.R.A. prize meetings. On this basis, it was competed for in each of six consecutive years, with the following results: — 1928, Featherston; , 1929, Featherston; 1930, Karori; 1931, Karori; 1932, Featherston; 1933, Greytown. The W.R.A. held no prize meetings during the vears 1934 and 1935. A prize meeting was held in i936, but no teams match was included in the programme, and again there was no contest for the shield. From 1937 till 1945 W.R.A. prize meetings were not held. Thirteen teams took part in the meeting held on April 13 of this year, the three leading scores being (possible 600) : Hautere, 561; Karori, 556; Petone, 553. The successful team was captained by H. A. Lumsden, who was the individual aggregate winner for the meeting.
