They refused to iin- ! plicate any companions and retaififed ! self-control to the last when behcaded. One Indian officer, who refusfea Japmicss iittbinpts to coerce him from allegiance, was finally beheadfed after two long periods in which he was starved and tortured. The Britishers were Colonel Lance- * ray Arthur Newnham and Captain Douglas Ford. Both were torturfed for five months hefore heing fexecut^d. The Indian ivas Cgpthln Matefen Ahmed Ansari, a close relation of an Indian Prince. He was imprisoned in Hong-kong in 1942 and released to liospital after five months because he was so mutiiated that he was unable to walk. Captain Ansari, when recdvered sulficiently, organised an escaping systeta but was betrayed, reimprisoned, starved and tortured for . several more months and finally beheaded without faltering in courage, defiance and endurance.
