Tikitiki settlement near Ruatoria today, the | well-known Maori leader, Sir Apirana j Ngata, consented to nomination as a : e.andidate for the Eastern Maori seat at i the general election. The gathering, ! which began yesterday with a reception !. to Lieutenant-Colonel J. C. Henare, | D.S.O.", offieer commanding the Maori i Battalion, was attendqd by mere than ! 400 Maoris from all parts of the Easti ern Maori eleetorate. | In responsc to earlier representations, Sir Apirana had expressed the view that it would be more appropriate for a i young.man to be nominated. /One ob^ i ject of the Tikitiki gathering was to ; obtain the feeling of Maori ex-serviee-men on this cpiestion, and a large nunv lier of fonner menibers of the Maori Battalion met privately this morning. It was later stated that they unani I mously wished Sir Apirana to stand.
