I was taken for a ride to-nignu, and was 1 . hard up," Thomas H-enry Smith, aged 26, a ship-"s steward, told the | police when he was charged at the ' police station on the ' morning of April 11 with having broken the| window of a jeweller's shop in Wii-i lis Street and committing theft. j Evidence to this effect was given | in the Magistrate's Court to-day ; when Smith pleaded guilty to-j breaking and entering and theft. , A police sergeant said that within a few minutes after *a telephone j message, advising that the window ; had been broken, he found accused ; in Lambton Quay with blood' on his i hands. A search revealed 51 rings and three ring stands in his posseosion, while eight more rings were found near the jeweller's shop. • An hotel proprietor said he heard ; the crash of glass and then saw a man put his hand through the hole f in the window.
