AUCKLAND, April 16. The belief that tlie suggestion that voluntary labour should be organised to speed up the loading of food sliips for Britain, was likely to stir up troublc among waterside workers, w-as ex]n essed to-dav by Mr. W. Ashton, secre■tary of the Auckland Trades Labour Couucil. Mr. Ashton said.. the proposal had not been diseussed by the oouncil and the belief expressed was his own. Her stated that as a member of the Laliour movement, he felt the Government would make an appeal if the need for labour was so great. It had to be rcmembered that the Waterfront Control Comniission had shown how im-
practicable voluntaiy labour co.rps would be. For instanc'e, arrangements would have to be made for the operations of auxiliary services such as railwavs, freezing works, cool stores, and cranes and winches. It appeared that the organisers had given no thought to these aspects, Mr. Ashton declared. The attitude of the Auckland Waterside ..Workers' 'Union was not available, the secretary of tlie union, Mr. R. Jones, said this morning. The nnion i president was absent "in Wellington and
any statomeut would have to come | from the national executive.
