DANGEROUSLY CRITICAL FOOD SITUATION
Received Sunday 7 p.m. NEW YORK, April 13. Although 1,526,000 tons of Unrra relief shipments reached liberated countries in March and created a record, Mr. LaGuardia said the percentage of food ip total declined five per cfent cojnpared with February and was only 41 per 6ent of the requirements. The main reaspn for the increased tonnage was the large percentage of
coal shipments. He said shipments of bread, grains, oils and fats fell f-ar he low minimum needs, thus creating a dangero.usly critical food 'Situation in all countries dependant on Unrra. Meanwbile Russia asked the Combined Foods Board for 3.0,000 tons of fat? and "oi! and would sep.d two ships to Buenos Aires to pick up 8000 tons oi fats and vegetable oil if the request was -granted,. The Russian request; is at present held in aheyance hecause Russia has not furnished information concern ing Soviet stocks of thes.e c.ommoditie on which an allocation must he made Officials pointed out that if the Russian request is granted, it will entail further cuts not only in the Unrra programme hut also in allocations to 'France Britain and Gther Fowers.
