EWE LAMBS FOR MEAT

A specially advertised line of 540 ewe lambs offered at the Feilding live stock sale yesterday on aecount of a Feilding breeder were sold for 22s ld and it was learned afterwards that these female sheep are • not destined to become breeders but are to be converted into meat. This aroused some comment when it became known that the lambs were to go to tbe freezing works for if this practice is to be earried out without discrimination the maintenance of flocks is likely to be placed in serious jeopardy. The lambs were advertised for the store pens and it was not considered that they wouid ' be acceptable as suitable for freezing nor was this in- ' tended by the vendor. lt is suggested that some check will require to be placed on any such inroads into young stock needed for breeding purposes.
