Boy's Bravery Honoured ln recogniiion of his rescue from' drowning of a young girl off Rona Bay wharf, Wellington, on January 27, 1945, the Royal Humane Society's certificate for brav.ery was presented yesterday to Donald*Roff, aged 15, a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Roff, Masterton. Before the assembled pupils of Wairarapa College and representatives of ihe local bodies, the Mayor (Mr. W. Kemp) read the citation and presented the certificate. Metal Tubes Metal moe. manufacturing is to be established in New Zealand as the outcome of investigations made by ihe director of a British company. Land and buildings have been purchased at Christchurch, and production will start within a few months. Machines to produce and manipulate tube are already in the Dominion and these will be installed with the least possible delay. Tubing for electrical conduits will be manufactured first and then other types. Loss of Penicillin A report" that 900,000 units of penicillin had been found to be missing from a reirigerator where it was stored in the Auckland Hospital ! was made to the Auckland Hospital i Board this week. Rubbish Removals A letter to the editor which appeared in Tuesday's issue of "The Chronicle" advocating more ! frequent rubbish removals in the | borough was referred to by 'the ^ Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) yeste'ri day. He advised that at a meeting i of the Levin Borough Council's | works committee on the evening ; prior to the appearance of the letj ter the matter had been considered } and as a result a recommendation would come before the council's monthly meeting on Monday next. Mr. Burdekin added that the matter had been in hand prior to the meeting of the works committee.
College Night Classes With the return of conditions to normal, it is expected that night classes at the Horowhenua College may be recommenced in the near future. At the meeting of the college advisory committee on Tuesr day evening, the acting-principal (Mr. F. Haley) stated that- the roll was at frresent.100, the numbers for i the various classes being dressmaking 35, shorthand and typing 18, book-keeping and accountancy 12, accountancy law 7, woodwork 11, and motor engineering 17. It is hoped that there will be an increase in the size of the classes once they have been established, particularly in the case of the woodwork section, the general opinion of members of the committee being that this class should prove very popular in the light of present-day conditions.
Constable Injured Showing signs of having been in a fight and exhibiting a damaged tunic, Constable D. W. Ellis, Moturoa', appeared as complainant in charges in the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court against Harold James Kendall, alleging assault and damage to his uniform to the extent of £4 17s 6d. Kendall, who pleaded guilty, was fined £10 on the assault charge and was convicted and ordered to pay the damage on the other charge. The police said that Ellis went to Kendall's house following a complaint of Kendall's behaviour. A fight started on the verandah. Ellis was having the worst of it, and jumped into his car to go for assistance. Kendall went after him, grabbed Ellis by the throat and injured his mouth and throat. Passers-by were called by Ellis to hold Kendall while Ellis went for help. In the meantime Kendall disappeared, but was sUbsequently arrested by a sergeant and two constables. .
