SHANNON'S OPINION DIVIDED
DETENTION BUILDINGS FOR TRANSIT CAMP The text of the Manawatu County Council's meeting reporting on the discussion of the possibility of making the Whitaunui Detention Camp into a transit camp to try and solve the housing problem, was shown to a number of citizens yesterday. Being a wet day a large proportion of working men were among those approached. The opinions were divided, many expressing the opinion that if families were housed in a transit camp it would delay the building of houses in this town. Others stated. that the idea was good. One mentioned that seven or eight families could be housed in the camp. "Concentration Camp," was the verdict of a returned serviceman. Another had the idea that if the camp was formed, then perhaps the bus would start running between Shannon and Foxton again — he® was a Moutoa man. Some refused to talk. It will be remembered that the matter was discussed at the last meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, and was held over until the next meeting. A suggestion that all the buildings be shifted to Shannon and rebuilt there was very popular, although the majority favoured the calling of a conference between the local bodies concerned. One person suggested that a public meeting should be called in Shannon to talk the matter over and said it was a pity that the subject was not known sooner.
