U.S. GRAND—JURY INDICTS RUSSIAN OFFICER

Received Wednesday, 11.20 p.m. WASJtixNGrcN, April 10. A Federal grand jury returned a five count indictment against Lieut. Nicolai Redin. Three counts charged mm with ohtaining information concerning national defence, the fourth accused tiim of inducing another person to obtain plans in connection with national defence, and the fifth with conspiring to obtain and transmit to a foreign Gov ernment plans dealing with nationai defence. The indictments alleged that Redin worked from April 1, 1944 ti March 26, 1946 in ohtaining information which was to he used to the injury of the United States and to the advanfcage of Russia. The State Department issued a state ment that the Soviet Embassy on Aprii 6, inquired from the State Departmen". L-egarding Redin 's arrest on March 26 indicating that, according to its in formation, there was no foundation fo' fche charges brought against Redin. It therefore asked that the case he drop 'ped, since Redin was innocent.
