FREEDOM FOR MR. CHIFLEY URGED

Leay, urged thaL Mr. Chifiey sliouid be "aboslutely free from domestic preoccupatioxis while he is abroad so that he can give undivided attention to matters that will probably. profoundly affect Australia for the nexx 50 years." His suggestion, which he first nia,de during the weekend, was for a poiiticai cruce to enable the Prime Minister oi Australia to spend more time abroaa. Ihis arose from a conviction that events at this stage of international affairs were immeasurably more important than any pencUng matter oi domestic politics. Mr. Menzie's comment was that there would he no poiiticai * "cease fire" as the Prime Minister commanded such a majority in both Houses that the U.poosition could not emharrass him, whojver else could.
