A NIGHT IN THE OPEN
Overtaken by darkness last Thursday evening, and clad only in Shorts and a cotton shirt, a Levin deerstalker was compelled to spend a night in the open at the head of the Canyon Creek. Leaving Levin after work with the intention of an evening Shoot. only, the sportsman was successful in securing a "kill" and in the resultant excitement he failed to realize just how late it was and how dark it was getting. In a vain dash to return to his mates with the aid o.f matches he was finally compelled to make camp at 7.50 p.m. when all hope of getting out disappeared with complete darkness. With only one match left, and camped on a srnall rock face, an attempt at. getting a fire going proved futile when the head came off the match. The deer hide secured earlier in the evening provided welcome warmth but with the absence of food and tobaceo daylight came all too slowly. . The sportsman was met by a eompanion at 6.30 a.m. and "after a hot bath and a square meal was little the worse for his night in the open.
