WORKING BEE ON WAIOPEHU
TRACK OPENING REC OMMENCED Despite a considerable amount of work carried out on it prior to the war, it was not possible" to complete the reopening of the Waiopehu' track, which was obliterated by thehurricane which swept the Tararuas iTi 1936. Providing as it does one of Levin's most interesting and poptllar parts for tramping, the LevinWaiopehu Tramping Club has taken up the task of completing the work. The first stage began during last week-end when a party of 12, including four ladies and under the leadership of Mr. N. M. Thomson, the club's president, had a wotkingl bee there. Leaving Levin at an early hour the trampers proceeded to the Pipe Bridge by car and made their way' up the track to Palmer 's Camp, where a stop was made for iunch. The weather was good up i o this stage, but while the billy was being boiled rain set in and continued throughout the day. After lunch the male members of the party spent two solid nours with slashes and axes cutting the track on from the point where it was left more than six years ago. Those Who participated are of the opinion that with a few strong working bees the work can soon be completed. Easter at Te Matawai Eight members of the club intend making a trip to Te Matawai Hut over the Easter holidays, leaving on Good Friday. Provided the Weather is favourable it is hoped to make some ascent of the back peaks and return on the Monday by way of Gable End Ridge. Anyone wishing to join the outing is invited to communicate with the club captain (Mr. P. Stannard) or secretary (Mr. G. H. Kerslake) .
