IF MALTA EVACUATION HAD BEEN NECESSARY

LORD GORT'S HEROIC PLAN Received Tuesday, 10.20 p.m. LONDON, April 2. Mr. Anthony Eden, in. a tribute to tfie late Lord Gort in the House of Commons, revealed that, if Lord Gort had been forced to evacuate Malta in 1942, he had planned, with Mr. Churchill 's approval, to land on the nearest enemy territory with the largest force that could be mustered. This would have been the heroic garrison 's last act. Happily, this extreme decision was never called for. The Daily Telegraph 's political correspondent says the landing was to have been made on Sici'Iy, the aim being to divert the enemy forces there and cause as much disruption as possibie in communications with North Africa.
