NATIVE FLORA CLUB
MONTHLY MEETING / The usual monthly meeting of the Levin Native Flora Club was held in the /Levin Schoolroom recently, with the president (Mr. I. D. Parsons) in the chair. Some apologies for unavoidable absence were recGivsd Mr. Griffith brought to the meeting some very good specimens of fruiting white pine twigs, which aroused- much interest. The specimens showed a good number of ripening fruits, each of which consisted of a succulent red fruit-stalk, supporting at its tip a naped shining black seed. the name of the genus, Podocarpus, to which white pine belongs, means fruit-footed, in reference t'o the foot or stalk, which, in ripening, hecomes ( a luscious small fruit for birds. Mr. N. _M. Thomson also described the prolific blooming of ratas in the Tararuas at present,. The locality chosen for the next club outing, on . April 14, was the L Horseshoe B.epd . of . the . Tokomaru River. Cars will leave the Levin Post Office at 9 a.m., and all wishing to participate in this excursion are asked to be there promptly s6 that carloads may be arranged. c'
